The Mask

Isn’t it funny how seriously we take ourselves?  We even have the feeling that we must be presented a certain way when out in public.  We peck at ourselves in the mirror, finding every little imperfection and demonizing it.  I often find myself checking my outfit in the mirror multiple times when I’m supposed to be going out and meeting a lot of people.  It’s almost like, at times, I have to put myself on.  I have to become prepared to be someone else once I go out in public.  Someone who’s constantly thinking about what other people think of me and perpetually self-conscious about the way I look.  However, at home, I’m relaxed and in a peaceful state of mind.  So, what is causing the disconnect between who we are in public versus in private?  Why are we putting on a mask and becoming, for lack of a better word, fakes?
Our masks can sometimes make it impossible to connect with other people.  Our souls and hidden and only a shell of who we really are is left.  I often wonder why this is and why exactly we don’t always feel comfortable around our fellow human beings.  If we’re all fellow souls all part of the same Universe/God, then why aren’t we able to go out into the world and feel that?
Somewhere along the way, we got lost in our heads and we forget that we are a community.  My goal is to get back to that place of feeling connected to my fellow human beings.  Our egos are constantly telling us that we are different and separate from everyone else.  Somehow, we believe that we are special.  Don’t get me wrong, we are definitely special, but not in the way that most of us like to think we are.  Our thoughts don’t make us special, our feelings don’t make us special, the way we present ourselves doesn’t make us special, and the things we claim to be do not make us special.  What makes us special is knowing that we are inherently divine in all ways and within us lives a piece of God.
I’m not talking about the Judo-Christian image of God.  I mean the totality of everything in existence, the energy of every single being and nonbeing in the whole universe, that is God.  We are all pieces of that puzzle.  In fact, it’s not really a puzzle at all.  It’s more like limbs of a tree.  We are all connected, we cannot be separated from anything, yet we act like we’re alone.  We think that no one understands us and how could anyone possibly be able to relate to what I’m going through?
Well, the truth is, there will always be someone who can relate to you.  There isn’t one person in this wold who is truly alone in their feelings.  Furthermore, we have a lot more in common then just our feelings.  We walk on the same Earth and we come from the same place.  We are not just brothers and sisters, we are beings who one day might be reunited with the whole, with each other.  None of us is more important than any other and that won’t change, even if you act like it.  Why hide behind a mask of false superiority when you can be free and united with the other souls on this planet?
Next time you feel anxious about going out in public and being around other people that you may not know, just remember that they are your equal in every way and if you open your hearts to them, you may be pleasantly surprised.  I’m not saying that every human encounter will be amazing if you only just open up, but it might make your life a whole lot more enjoyable.

Peace.
